I have to agree with Graham on this one. Commercial
partners don't have to participate in a complex
exchange, because they can get the data and assent
they need without it.
At some point, privacy tools will be far enough along
that the commercial partners are the ones pushing
for this kind of thing, because they're shut out
of getting it on a one-way basis. But who's going
to go to a marketing meeting and say, "you know
all that user data we're taking, on our own terms?
Let's start negotiating for it instead."
At VRM day, the first point on the first day was to
_assume_ privacy, because none of this stuff works
without it.
It will be a good sign when sites start _asking_
me to join -- that will show that privacy is finally
making an impact. (In the personal data store, VRM
is the cash register; privacy is the loss prevention
department.)
