For the last few months we (Ctrl-Shift) have been researching the potential size of the market for fourth party services, which in this report we call Personal Information Management Services (PIMS).
The research is UK only, and looks at the potential size of a mature market for these types of services. It distinguishes between different 'breeds' of PIMS i.e. those that focus on helping individuals manage and control their data vs those that help individuals use their data to do stuff.
We find that overall, PIMS could account for 1.2% of the economy (£16,5bn). For comparison, that's bigger than the UK car industry and the UK pharmaceuticals industry (but a lot smaller than financial services, distribution and retail).
We also analysed effects on existing businesses and find more opportunity than threat - basically around trusted and permissioned access and use of personal data to create new, improved services.
I'd be interested in any comments or thoughts the research triggers.
