I received this 'spammy' message and was especially disappointed to see it referring to many 'VRMy' initiatives.   If this project is part of the VRM community, one would hope that this company's leadership has learned that long-winded, unsolicited, 'bulk email,' product promotions to people who don't know you are rather inappropriate.

Hi,

I'm not sure about you but this year seems to be disappearing even before it has started. With so much going on it has been difficult to keep track of the momentum that is definitely building in the identity space, both from a private as well as public sector perspective. NSTIC is in their third round of pilots; ID Assurance in the UK is just starting the second and at TDL we are running our own funded sprints. We continue to see interest in the virtual currency space and now in payments, as well as some other great use cases for trusted identities being developed within the DOJ, with eSignatures and online merchants in general.

Momentum builds momentum and the great work that has been happening in the public sector is now translating to industry. More than that - it's being translated into real value with the recognition that it is the consumer who needs to be placed at the center of this activity. Ctrl-Shift held a great event on the Personal Information Economy in March with much discussion around this topic and the market for verified attributes. Enabling a layer of trust in the Internet is something that I fundamentally believe is the enabler to doing not just more of the same things - but more new things, more higher value or critical things - online. Avoka demonstrated this at Finovate Spring, showing how miiCard speeds the on boarding processes in financial services.

Taking a distributed vs. siloed (or big data) approach to personal data is also being recognized and was reflected in a number of chats with NEC and others at the last Trust in Digital Life event. Managing many of the issues, such as 'right to be forgotten' (recently upheld in a EU / Google court case), personal data protection, trust marks and transparency continue to develop again showing real progress in the market.

The Respect Network is taking a step forward having just relaunched the site and working with multiple Personal Cloud Providers to launch the environment you need to control your personal data and connections. If you would like an early invite to securing your personal cloud name - we have a few invites for you available. Get your personal cloud name here.

At miiCard we have re-launched our website at www.miicard.com to reflect the completeness of the platform. Keeping to those KISS principles we love so much - we have cut down the content and simplified the structure.  We're also developing a showcase to highlight some of the exciting use cases within our own identity ecosystem.

On the site you'll notice there are two key market focuses we're developing. With the increase in regulatory activity such as affordability here in the UK we have seen a huge increase in demand for trusted identities in the lending space. We are finding great success with our identity services for the full lifecycle of lending from affordability, compliance, signatures and even recovery. We have recently furthered this by allowing bureau data (UK available now, US coming soon) to be available as a complete miiCard + Callcredit solution through a single API. This means that miiCard is a complete service and is being leveraged through partnerships with platforms like LendFusion and Zoot to change the way high value lending is conducted online.

With the ever increasing fraud rates and challenges with disruption in online payments, we have also seen increased demand in this area. Regulatory changes in some countries where both the sender and receiver (even if internationally) have to be verified further strengthens our position as a global identity platform. The real activity though has been in removing simple fraud such as chargebacks for credit card payments and applying a layer of trust through ACH payments networks that ensures the identities and funds are available throughout the process. Working with payment platform eMerchantPay we now have a single solution for merchants.

In terms of the many other things, I would like to draw your attention to Trust in Digital Life. At the last event we awarded $25,000 EURO to Trustseed for a sprint project  enabling notarized electronic signatures. There was a fantastic response and a great set of participants including Cryptas, CASED and KU Leuven. For the next round we are planning to take this up a notch, increasing both the participants and support. Let me know if this is something you or someone you know would be interested in and we can get you involved to give your pitch in true Dragons' Den style!

For miiCard - a lot continues to happen. We graduated from SixThirty; got some recent coverage in Techli and PYMNTS; moved to CodeBase; and continue to be noted for awards, including this listing on Britain's Hot Talent by BVCA. This is all due to a fantastic team here at miiCard and being involved in a hugely active and inspiring startup community in Edinburgh.

Our team, if you didn't catch the news, has gone from strength to strength with Douglas Shand joining us as Chief Product Officer and both Lazaro Campus and Richard Lewis joining our board earlier this year.

In other news we have closed some funding and will soon be able to talk about a number of very exciting key projects for us that will really bring together almost everything we have been working on over the last few years. Keep an eye on the papers ;)

And finally, having had our first case of a returned device on miiTag, I wanted to mention this site again. The service was started as part of some event promotions last year. It is designed to 'tag' your phone, iPad, keys, etc and allow someone to get in touch if they find your item without you having to share all your personal data. It is a simple and free service that anyone can use. If you need stickers or want a couple tags let me know - but do register on www.miitag.com

After intending to sit down and write a quick email I see that it's now quite long so I'll stop here! Hope all is well and look forward to catching up soon.

Cheers,

James
