Yes, when people think of cool IT
projects in Africa, usually only Ushahidi comes to mind, but
there's actually much more.
That's why a group of (mostly European I think) hackers recently went on the Africa Hack Trip, to expore the local hacking and startup hubs in 4 East African capitals. A documentary about this is in the making. And right now a few of us are in Kenya at Hacker Beach, A very colorful and productive get-together of African, European and American hackers. Frankly speaking, looking at the current web landscape and the mindset it was built with, it might not be a bad thing if the next-generation architectures, protocols and applications came from a non-"Western" corner of the world.
