| Hi Doc Thanks for your email. I am a free thinker myself. It comes from my Northern English, Methodolist, Agricultural, Grammar School upbringing. But I am not a libertarian. Hence my general difficulties with libertarians in general and their moralising in particular. Whilst I understand the libertarian perspective from having read philosophers like Hayek, Nozick and Chomsky, its over-emphasis of liberty at the expense of other moral values such as equality, caring, loyalty, authority, and sanctity so easily leads to an unhealthy imbalance. Social liberals are a little more balanced with their consideration of liberty, equality and caring, but they still leave out loyalty, authority, and sanctity. I prefer a more balanced moral approach encompassing all six moral values in roughly equal measure; whilst all moral values are important, none of them is more important than any other. This inevitably leads to a broader consideration of the competing interests of different actors in today's complex adaptive ecosystems and the trade-offs that must be made to balance them out. I am particularly interested in Paul Ormerod's new book on 'Positive Linking: How Networks & Incentives Can Revolutionise the World' that looks at this topic (http://www.paulormerod.com). Perhaps I should read it whilst rereading Michael Sandel's 'What Money Can't Buy: The Moral Limits to Markets' (http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2012/04/what-isnt-for-sale/308902/) at the same time. I do respect your hard work in bringing VRM to the verge of life (with the help of others on this list). As AdTech becomes ever more sophisticated, customers reclaim their data from companies and contextual analytics learns from IoT we find ourselves in very interesting times. Who's knows what solutions will emerge to meet the different actors needs and to allow them to co-create value together. Let's leave the moralising to deep philosophers and shallow politicians, and focus instead on what people really want. The original purpose of my Cynefin-inpsired post. With my best regards and respect for the work you do, Graham On Sep 20, 2013, at 2:38 PM, Doc Searls <
