One interesting by product of all of this is that if you block the advertising data aggregators, you effectively block the government.  Private business is much more efficient at this than Uncle Sam (and I suspect any other government, for that matter). 

As for the money-motivation.  If you or anyone you know has ever been the victim of identity theft – then it is easy to understand why they want to mask their identity.  The time and cost to fix the problem (and all of the financial fallout) is staggering.
