There are places where we expect advertising -- the
boards around the outfield at the ballpark, the back
cover of a magazine, even some places on the web.
It's part of the culture that will never go away
completely, as long as business people want to use
support for culture as a way to signal willingness
to stand behind their goods and services.

We're in a bubble where advertising is being called on
to do more than its share. No, advertising probably
shouldn't be paying for your email archives or
family photo collection, and the sooner we realize
advertising's limitations the better. And "social
media" is not a form of advertising at all -- it's
more of a support ticket system in public, but that's
another story.
