I think the ideas you've expressed concerning the use of the "lowly mail client" deserve strategic attention. They have immediate value if for no other reason than, like you say, as a bridge to a user-driven experience. Its an active integration point... a platform that a pds, trust-framework,social graph, identity, etc can integrate with...right? Specific refinements of its use would be required...but its a starting point. Is there anything better suited presently?
I also think your points on the cloud are well put. "In the cloud" can certainly be used to create the opposite meaning of "data sovereignty"... unless its use is well founded. My idea of strategic use is best represented by a picture:
What is the best/most direct way to contribute to these ideas via FF/Thunderbird... as you see it?

Very cool. Until they lose funding and close down, or I find I want to improve their parsing? Is "in the cloud" the antonym to "data sovereignty"? Not to be a cloud skeptic, it's clearly different when Goog and Apple are behind it, but I'm still stranded without BB data coverage at the moment and smarting from failed dependencies and promises that I would hope VRM would somewhat free me from.
