+1 great discussion. A couple of thoughts: Privacy & Agency: Do we agree that Privacy is a factor of Agency - whereby: - Agency is the capacity of individuals to act independently and to make their own free choices (i.e. freedom/liberty). - Privacy is where one utilises agency (freedom of choice) to decide not to participate in, or to actively withdraw from, a context. Working the equation the other way if a person is forced, without choice, to disengage from society we don’t call it privacy, we call it kidnap/ prison/ solitary confinement. It’s a crime against us or a punishment. Privacy can’t exist without agency (freedom). I’m no expert but I guess that in the US this could be argued as being part of a Citizens 1st and 4th amendment rights? Privacy & Value: On the point of privacy having value. It has personal as well as monetary value. For example, if I choose (utilise agency) to withdraw from a context (privacy) with an entity that is monetizing my persona (e.g. by deleting Facebook or using adblocking) - that entity looses the cash value that they were previously extracting. Hence our screwed up Web 2.0 market dynamic: i.e. for that entity, me exercising my right to chose privacy = a loss of revenue = unhappy shareholders = withdrawal form participation (privacy) is bad (leading to dystopian 2.0 memes: "sharing is caring”, “having multiple accounts/personas is dishonest”, "privacy is theft” etc. etc.). It’s a dysfunctional market model, which is why it will be disrupted. With web 3.0 we are starting to fix this by giving all digital citizens control over where, how, when and why they choose (agency) to participate - or not to participate (privacy). The reasons that citizens will choose to interact in a specific context will be a multifaceted combination of many things such as: cash, better UX, an easier life, fun, self actualisation, deeper personalisation, life meaning, community connection, altruistic etc. etc. And it’s their absolute right to choose what those reasons are - that’s what agency is all about.
