It all becomes moot if the mechanisms designed to resolve any disputes between the parties (e.g.legal/political system) are inadequate (or believed to be inadequate) to address an imbalanced power relationship between the parties (e.g large corporation vs isolated individual).

The key word above is isolated.

We are not isolated on the Internet and large corporations, quite rightly, understand the power of the crowd.  They will act in ways beneficial to them - but we have to provide them with the tools and systems to make VRM possible.  Most will adopt and deploy VRMish systems when they are available and cost less than current systems.  The reason is that the VRM approach is fundamentally less expensive to operate because giving individuals control reduces the work organisations have to do to perform transactions (think supermarkets versus boutique stores).  VRM is better for most organisations and we need to mobilise those organisations to support VRM.  They - with us - will even tame the NSA and other similar organisations.
