"Watching the audience" is common to any interactive television effort.
The late '90's Microsoft Interactive (MiTV) -- which has some trials in some cities but never deployed, especially after Microsoft bought WebTV -- was also based on a model where the Carrier watches what the user does, for targetted ads, etc.

Now that computer vision is useful, things are even better for the Carriers.
