Title: Balance Agile with CMMI for the Best of Both Worlds
Gang,

I just received notice for a talk hosted by CollabNet on CMMI: Capability Maturity Model Integration.
First I've ever heard of it. When I saw terms of "accountability," "planning, documentation, auditability, and traceability," a little bell rang connecting CMMI with the accountability and compliance that a 4th Party Services Agreement might entail.

Thoughts? Experience? Am I connecting two completely unrelated worlds?

Balance Agile with CMMI for the Best of Both Worlds
Balance Agile with CMMI for the Best of Both Worlds

There’s no doubt that Agile’s iterative development approach with less documentation has led to faster results, shorter development cycles, and reduced costs over traditional waterfall methods. However, as good as Agile can be from the developers’ perspective, it can be trying for corporate controllers and other executives who need to comply with government regulations and audits.

In an effort to drive repeatability, measurement, and refinement, many companies are implementing Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) across their organizations. CMMI defines a clear set of process goals, metrics and best practices for each stage of process “maturity” and guides organizations on how to foster accountability and results. It’s all about planning, documentation, auditability, and traceability.

With such opposing forces, how can a company empower engineers to get the results associated with Agile development, yet still meet the corporate demands of CMMI compliance?
