Harvard Open Access Project (HOAP) May 2014 Update, Private Version

This list is restricted to the nine principals on the Harvard Open Access Project, HOAP research assistants Emily Kilcer, Andrea Bernard, Amanda Page, the Program Manager at the Office for Scholarly Communication (Sue Kriegsman), and a Berkman staffer, Adam Holland. Please let us know if you would suggest we add others to this list.

In addition to sharing updates, conversations, and information on HOAP, we will use this list to share monthly updates with the core group. Please note that these updates will include private and confidential information; please do not circulate them publicly.

Building off these updates, we will also create versions that will be made publicly available for community members, partners, and other interested parties. Feel free to share the public versions of these updates with your networks.

Update, Private Version, May 2014


I. Ongoing Work

OPEN ACCESS DIRECTORY Peter and HOAP research assistant Andrea Bernard continue to update and expand the Open Access Directory (OAD).

SOCIETIES AND OPEN ACCESS RESEARCH Peter, Caroline Sutton, and HOAP research assistant Amanda Page continue to update and expand their catalog of open-access journals published by scholarly societies.


II. Events

MEETINGS AND TALKS

Peter spoke on open access and copyright at a panel discussion hosted by DARTH (Digital Arts & Humanities at Harvard University) Crimson, at Harvard Law School, April 1, 2014. Peter spoke on open access by teleconference to Morningside College on April 14, 2014. The Harvard Library published an interview with Peter Suber on the 23 takedown notices Elsevier sent to Harvard last fall. Peter helped celebrate the sixth birthday of the Open Access Directory (OAD) on April 30, 2014, at the Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science. He is a co-founder of the OAD. Peter spoke on open access at Wellesley College on May 13, 2014. Peter Suber and Peter Hirtle led a two-hour session for Berkman Fellows on May 20, 2014, on how authors should decide what they want from a publishing contract, and how to read a contract to see how well it delivers what they want.​


III. Work with Other Institutions

CONSULTATIONS Confidential. Peter started consulting with the University of North Carolina about an OA policy. Confidential. Peter started consulting with Cornell University on an OA policy.

ADVOCACY Four HOAP principals are key players in the new Authors Alliance, launched May 21, 2014. Bob Darnton and Jonathan Zittrain are on the Advisory Board, and Stuart Shieber and Peter Suber are among the founding members.


IV. Technical Developments

TAGTEAM PROGRESS HOAP developed TagTeam 1.0 in 2011-2012, and launched version 1.5.2 on April 10, 2014.

HOAP's primary objective in developing TagTeam is to enhance the Open Access Tracking Project (OATP), which moved to TagTeam in September 2012. However, HOAP is developing TagTeam as a general-purpose tool useful for social-tagging projects on any topic. The development is funded by the Harvard Library Lab.
