Empirical Analysis of Internet Filtering in China

In August-September 2002, the authors conducted Google searches for the top 100 results associated by Google with the terms listed below. For each term listed, the middle column of the table reports the proportion of the top 10 Google results found to be blocked in China (inaccessible in China on at least two occasions from at least two distinct locations, and simultaneously accessible from the US) while the right column gives the corresponding result as among the top 100 sites for each term. Terms designated "in Chinese" were entered in Chinese into the Chinese-language version of the Google search engine. This data is also available in chart form.

Below each keyword are listings of sites that are both 1) included in the top 100 Google results for that keyword, and 2) found to be blocked in China. On most browsers, positioning the mouse cursor above these links yields a popup reporting more information about the correpsonding site as well as details about its blocking in China.
