This is crucial because the Aberjona River has been contaminated by many decades of industrial pollution completely unrelated to Grace's operation. For example, one recent study states: "Significantly elevated concentrations of arsenic have been found in soils and in riverine and lacustrine sediments in the Aberjona watershed in eastern Massachusetts. . . . Historical records indicate that much of the arsenic in this watershed was generated as a by-product of sulfuric acid and arsenical pesticide manufacturing between 1888 and 1929."
