Most homes in the UK will have some kind of carpeting in a room or two, and many people opt for carpeted floors throughout their homes. Carpets are known for being warmer and more comfortable than hard flooring, but they come with an additional need for cleaning. This is because carpet fibres and structures are places which are easy for dirt to get into, and a simple vacuum clean is unlikely to give you as thorough a clean as you need.

As carpets are magnets for dust, dirt and hairs, they can also make our allergies worse, and can even trigger asthma attacks. This still happens even when a carpet is vacuum cleaned a couple of times per week, so if you have carpeted floors that you want to be as clean as possible then you will need to invest in occasional deep cleaning.

While vacuuming is great for removing surface dirt from carpets, it is best to have them shampooed and deep cleaned at least a few times every year. This will dramatically reduce the levels of pathogens in your home, as well as lifting and removing allergens such as pet hair, dust mite faeces, pollen and animal dander. The only way to do this is to wash the fibres deeply with a carpet washing device.

The number of times in a year that you should deep clean your carpets depends on a number of factors. For example, high traffic areas of the home can be home to much higher levels of dirt than parts of the home which have less traffic, and not only does this make your carpets unsanitary, it also dulls them and makes them look dirty and unkempt.

If you have pets, kids, or are a smoker then you will more than likely need to deep clean your carpets more often than a couple of times per year. In fact, if your home has any of these factors then you should aim to deep clean all your carpets and rugs quarterly. This will keep them clean and fresh, and will stop them from looking worn.

Steam cleaning is a popular choice that many people use to clean their homes. Many domestic steamers have carpet attachments to help them glide over the surface and while they are capable of sterilising any dirt in the carpet they do not actually remove it, and will not give your carpets the clean and fresh look that domestic carpet cleaning can achieve.

The main difference between a carpet steamer and a carpet deep cleaner is that the deep cleaner will not only sterilise your carpets, but it will use a chemical cleaner plus water to completely remove dirt from the pile. This gives your carpets and rugs a new lease on life and makes them look great for longer.

The most affordable way to deep clean your carpets at home is to hire a cleaning machine a few times a year. This is usually more cost effective than buying a machine outright, though this can be an option as there are many which are perfect for home use and are cheaper in the long term than hiring a machine.

If your carpet is quite new then there is a chance it is still under warranty. If this is likely to be the case for your carpets then you will need to check any specific care requirements that your carpet has in order to give it the best care possible. The information on most warranties will state that it is best to have your carpets cleaned by a professional once per year, and this advice is best followed in order to keep your carpets in top condition.

In conclusion, it is important to give your carpets a deep clean to protect your family from allergens and pathogens which can affect their health. Vacuuming is an important part of carpet care and maintenance, but it does not remove all the dirt from the deep pile of your carpet. Steam cleaners can be a great way to clean your carpets after you have vacuumed them, but to keep them as clean as possible you should aim to have them deep cleaned at least once a year.
