I am characterizing the R&D process that brings diagnostic kits to market with a particular focus on which steps involve patent (or other IP) activity.
I keep some notes in Evernote and then transfer them to the wiki. You can view my ICP evernote collection here
Here are all my contributions to the wiki.
current goals
Publish report about Commons-based activity in Diagnostic Kit Sector by end of September
- touch base on Monday w/ Carol
- work on skeleton of paper, meet to lay it out next Thursday (sept 3) morning
- re-read biotech section in april ICP report; discuss w/ Carol
Experts

research agenda
Mac: focus on technology of kits
(first look at developmental process, then we will analyze access to the kit)
- What is a diagnostic kit?
- Where are kits sold, to whom, for what?
- Diagnose a disease; predict a disease; Direct-to-Consumer kits
- What are the inputs needed to develop a kit?
- What is the development process / value chain that leads to a clinical diagnostic kit?
- Aare there commons-based models active anywhere along the kit development pipeline (w/ andrew)
Andrew talks about patents
Andrew there Thurs & Fri: Just enumerating the patents that might pertain to diagnostics is hard:
- multiple databases
- classification scheme for scope of protection
- Carol: "we know duke team behind oft-used duke patent database; we can get in touch with them"
