Our notions of privacy have been formed when space was the defining feature. The permanence of most online material brings in a big temporal component. Things shift over time—the words I add to a profile get repurposed when the company that owned that site is bought. How do we communicate the degree of public or private a particular context is? What do we know of the eye that is watching—what should we know of its intent and capabilities? How do we balance the desire for “public security” with our rights of privacy and anonymity? Is this a false dichotomy? What principles, practices and technologies should be employed towards protecting and advancing these rights in the digital future?
