Re: [dvd-discuss] "Star Wars Movie Now Showing on Internet"

OK So what we have here are pirated copies from PRIVATE showings (Exercise
for the alert reader- Hollywood can't supply its own security before the
show is released ;by watching the audience or NOT inviting crooks)....and
the biggest threat is file compression... "it's not CD or DVD quality, but
it's still digital quality, and it won't degrade." (if it's not CD or DVD
quality, it's not already degraded?)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the latest preemptive Internet release of Hollywood's newest feature
film,
pirated versions of "Star Wars: Attack of the Clones" are making their
way
around the Web via Internet Relay Chat (IRC), according to published
 reports.

A week before the highly anticipated movie hits theaters, Internet users
are
viewing the feature as well as distributing illegal copies via IRC and
other
file-sharing protocols. One of the pirated copies is reportedly a
camcorder
 recording of a private screening.

While the latest Star Wars film reportedly is being distributed primarily
via
IRC, the Yankee Group's Goodman said the biggest platform for illegal
movie
distribution is DivX, a file compression coding method.

"However, we're seeing more and more leaks in the production line, so
you're
getting similar quality to what you'd see if you were sitting in the
theater,"
Goodman said. "It's digitized -- it's not CD or DVD quality, but it's
still digital
 quality, and it won't degrade."

 Compression Coming

"Watch the technology in compression," Mak said, referring to DivX and
other file compression technologies. "They're making strides there. It
will be
some time before files get down to a transferable, manageable size, so
the
threat is a little way off, but that will be a concern."

[According to a recent CNNfn analysis, the movie
industry seems to be one of the few businesses that
continues to see sizeable financial growth.]
