Worth noting that this forum has dealt with this subject matter before,
and well predating the June 2001 date mentioned in the Salon article too!

OK, so that thread was more concerned with the technicalities, but I think
the legal aspects were mentioned at least a few times. Mostly though to
do with using the "obvious legality" of doing your own DVD commentaries
to try and show legitimate uses for linux DVD players employing non-DVDCCA
authorised decryption algorithms.
